Focus vs. Concentration

Although focus and concentration are often used interchangeably they do not carry the same meaning. 

Focus is about intentional attention. Concentration is more about what you do with the intention – the mental activities you take to accomplish goals. 

Focus is chosen attention. Concentration is the action taken as a result of that focused attention. For example, you can choose to concentrate on writing your marketing strategy instead of meetings. 

Staying focused allows you to retain information efficiently. When you are concentrated, you can better use all your resources to execute tasks and solve problems.

The rule of thumb is that:

  • Internal distractions are the archenemy of focus. 
  • External distractions are the archenemy of concentration. 

However, both types of extractions can create obstacles on your way to increasing focus and productivity. 

Practices such as self-reflection and mindfulness help with removing internal distractions. 

A time management system helps with reducing or eliminating external distractions.

Motivation plays a huge role in setting goals. 1. Dedicate to deep work.

Deep work that requires engaging your core cognitive abilities is the one that brings the greatest return on investment of your time. Find your optimal productivity slot in the day and mobilize your strengths to develop the structure of your business. Delegate and automate the rest.

2. Set up daily timeboxing routines.

An effective timeboxing system consists of clear, well-defined time boxes in your schedule that you stick to maximize productivity and sharpen focus. Whatever it looks like, make sure you follow through and use it as a framework for streamlining the path to your goals.  

3. Prioritize complex cognitive tasks with the greatest impact.

The toxic work productivity trends can make you stressed and sick. Being healthily productive is taking steps towards growth without compromising other life areas and needs.
